While you may be familiar with the more common ways homeowners insurance protects you and your family, your homeowners policy may in fact cover you for much more than you realize.

Homeowners insurance typically protects people and things that reside within your home. However, if you have children moving out of the house to go to school, your homeowners insurance may continue to cover them, as well as all of their belongings while they are away. 

It is important to note that your child may only qualify for coverage if he or she is living in a building owned by the university, like a dormitory. If your student is planning to live off-campus, he or she may want to consider applying for renters insurance.
