10 tips for safe holiday travel from the IBC

December 18th, 2014 by admin

The holiday season is quickly approaching, and the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) wants to make sure Canadians stay safe on the road. Ralph Palumbo, Vice-President, Ontario, IBC, recently issued a statement reminding motorists to pay extra care and attention this time of year.

"IBC wants to help make sure everyone's holiday season is fun and safe," said Palumbo. "Being prepared for winter roads and paying extra attention during this festive time of year could help ensure the safety of you and everyone on the road."

Here are the IBC's 10 tips for safe holiday season driving:

  • If you're attending a holiday party or any other celebration, don't drink and drive.
  • When shopping, don't leave presents in sight in your car.
  • Don't allow holiday planning or anything else to distract you while driving.
  • You're very likely to be busy this time of year, but make sure to get rest. "If you are tired, pull off the road to a safe spot and nap," says the Bureau.
  • Exercise extra caution when driving at night.
  • Always be sure to drive according to the road conditions.
  • Don't leave your car unattended while you're warming it up.
  • If you see an animal on or near the road, know what to do in advance.
  • Make sure your vehicle is "tuned up and ready for winter's worst."
  • Always remember "Safety first." Refer to your province's regulations regarding proper seat belt use, child car seats and booster seats – and remember to use these at all times.

The IBC's focus is consistent with other campaigns it's currently running. As the lead sponsor of the CWHL this season, the IBC plans to run a "don't text while driving" ad during the league's All-Star Game on Dec. 13.
