3 winter driving tips to reduce risk
January 14th, 2015 by admin
No one likes driving in snowy or icy conditions. But taking a few preventative measures beforehand can help ensure safe driving and your peace of mind. Before driving in bad weather (if you have to), be sure to check the following in your vehicle: the battery, lights, belts, brakes, windshield wipers, defroster, heater and exhaust system. All of these parts should be inspected and found to be in good working condition.
Here are some specific winter driving tips:
- Check that your tires have adequate tread and air pressure. All-weather radials are sufficient for most winter conditions. In addition, you should regularly check the air pressure, making sure that it adheres to the manufacturer's recommendations.
- Make sure you have at least a half tank of gas during the winter season. Maintaining this level of gas ensures you have a source of heat if you become stranded or stuck on the road, situations which are more frequent during the winter months.
- Clear snow and ice off your vehicle. After a snowfall, be sure to clear off your windshield, windows, outside mirrors, lights, reflectors, hood, roof and trunk. Visibility is one of your best defences against poor weather conditions, while clear lights and reflectors alert other drivers of your presence. In addition, clearing snow off your vehicle prevents it from flying off and obstructing your view while you drive.
