4 tips for traveling with kids this summer

There's nothing better than summer. The sun is out and it's a great time to go on a family vacation with your kids. Do you have any trips planned this season? Whether you plan on driving to visit grandma, or are going on a beach adventure, take a look at these safety tips for driving with children:

  • Always wear your seatbelt: Have you heard of the old expression, 'monkey see, monkey do'? Kids are likely to follow your lead, so instill safe habits in them by always wearing your seatbelt when driving.
  • Check car seats: "With the children out of school for the summer, keep them safe by double-checking that car seats and booster seats are properly installed, especially when heading out on a long road trip," writes Karin Caifa of CNN. "A certified technician at a local car seat inspection station can check that, usually free of charge."
  • Don't let children sit up front: Although your youngster may be begging you to ride shotgun, this isn't safe for anyone under 12 years of age. If you were to get into an accident, the airbags can be very harmful for kids, so be sure that they're buckled in back.
  • Never leave a child alone in the car: Don't leave your children alone in your car, even if you open the windows. This can be very dangerous, especially for young children. In some instances, a hot car can lead to dizziness, heat stroke and even death.
