5 summertime car safety and performance tips
June 14th, 2016 by

With warm weather right around the corner, the way we interact with our cars changes in some subtle – yet meaningful – ways. Before you head to the beach for sun and fun this summer, consider these tips to both improve your car's performance and stay safe in the heat.
Check your tires
With the changing of the weather, your tire pressure is likely to change. Air contracts as it heats up, meaning that you lose 1 to 2 PSI (pounds per square inch) for every 10-degree increase in outside air temperature. Underinflated tires have a big impact on your gas mileage and are much more likely to rupture. Review your car's owner's manual to determine the ideal tire PSI, and check your tires regularly.
Change your oil and refill coolant
We tend to do more driving in the summer months than any other time of the year – which in turn raises the chance of your car overheating. Before you head out on any road trips, check your oil and top off coolant.
Park with the wheel turned 180 degrees
When you park your car on a hot day, turn your car's steering wheel 180 degrees in either direction. That way, when you return to the car, the side of the steering wheel you touch will not burn your hands.
Run AC with windows down to cool a car faster
By running your AC for a few minutes with the windows down, the warm air will be pushed out of the windows, cooling the car faster. Once your car's temperature has stabilized, roll up the windows to retain as much of the cool air as possible.
Be aware of the glare
The glare from a beaming sun isn't just uncomfortable, it can be a driving hazard. To avoid being blinded, bring sunglasses with you.
