Holiday safety tips for the whole family

The holidays can be a joyous time with family and friends, but also a good time to focus on safety for your home.

The holidays can be a joyous time with family and friends, and they're also a good time to focus on safety for your home. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates there were 15,000 injuries reported by emergency departments nationwide during November and December 2012 involving holiday decorating. That comes out to nearly 250 people injured every day.

"Adding safety to your checklist can keep a holiday tradition from becoming a holiday tragedy," said CPSC Acting Chairman Robert Adler. "Keep Christmas trees watered well, don't leave candles unattended, and use caution whenever you are on a ladder."

Regardless of your homeowners insurance, it pays to stay safe. With that in mind, here are a few holiday safety tips for your home.

Inspect holiday lights

Keep an eye out for cracked bulbs and frayed wires that could start an electrical fire. Dry Christmas trees can be flammable, so keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case.

Keep lights and ornaments away from small children

Children may instinctively reach for lights and sparkling objects to place in their mouth. Ornaments can be delicate and sharp when broken, and in addition to the choking hazard may also have toxic or hazardous coatings.

Keep on top of toy safety recalls

Every year, the CPSC details a list of toys that have been recalled by the manufacturer having safety hazards. Subscribe to their weekly email list so you can make sure the toys you have bought for your children are safe.
