Home Insurance Can Protect You From Holiday Disasters

A lot can go wrong during the holidays.

The holidays are a time to enjoy the company of family and friends. What could go wrong?

A lot, as it turns out. Just because you're celebrating doesn't mean that you won't face a situation that requires home insurance. It's better to be protected than to risk something that might seriously disrupt your holiday and leave you with bills to pay throughout the new year.

Here are just a few things that might go wrong:

  • Theft. Shoppers are doing a lot of online ordering this season, meaning that there will be many vulnerable packages waiting outside to be stolen. In addition, Large electronics tend to come in distinctive boxes. Even after all the gifts have been unwrapped, the sight of these boxes in a trash or recycling bin may tempt a thief. No one wants to wake up one morning to find that all the gifts have been stolen.
  • House fires. Do you aim for the authentic holiday experience? A real tree, a roaring fire, lit candles and electric lights hanging all over the house? It makes for a great image, but it also increases your risk of a fire. Unexpected electrical problems and actual flames can quickly spread before you have a chance to pull out the fire extinguisher. Be very cautious when tending to the fireplace and stringing your lights.
  • Frozen pipes. You might chose to spend this holiday away from home. However, as the weather gets increasingly frigid, your risk of a catastrophic pipe failure increases. Your heating system could fail, causing pipes to freeze and burst. The subsequent flood water could lead to some serious damage.
