Keep your toddler safe with these childproofing devices

If you have a little one at home or on the way, no doubt you've thought about taking some steps to childproof your home. It can feel like a chore to go through the house, moving anything swallow-able out of reach and securing anything fragile. In addition to these removable hazards, however, there are also a number of features of your home that you can't simply move out of the way, such as stairs and electrical outlets, that can be equally as harmful to your child. In this post, we'll identify some safety devices to help you childproof those permanent installations you just can't do without.

Safety latches and locks

Cabinets and drawers in kitchens and bathrooms can hide potentially poisonous chemical products, sharp utensils and other products that would be unsafe in the hands of a toddler. Protect these cabinets with safety latches strong enough to withstand your young one's stubborn attempts, but easy enough to use that you won't be inconvenienced.

Safety gates

While you can't do anything to move your stairway somewhere a crawler can't reach it, you can use safety gates to keep the little one from tumbling down the stairs. Safety gates can block entire doorways as well, and are perfect for keeping babies out of rooms where hazards are present. They are also easy to move, so you can pop them up in a pinch in case of a spill or if you can't help leaving fragile items out in the open.

Door knob covers

Just because a room or stairway has a door you can close, that doesn't mean it's off limits to a resourceful toddler. Door knob covers can keep children out of rooms you can't babyproof. Just make sure the covers you select are easy enough to operate in case an adult needs to open the door in an emergency.

Outlet covers

Outlet covers can help prevent children from electrical shock and possible electrocution. Be sure, however, that the covers you choose are large enough that children can't choke on them.
