Spring Ahead: IBC’s 10 tips

March 13th, 2015 by

With daylight saving time just passed, now is the perfect occasion to make sure your home is prepared for the season. The Insurance Bureau of Canada affirms that it's important to take some basic steps around the house to ensure you and your family's safety.

Toward that end, here are the IBC's 10 tasks to complete around daylight savings time:

  • Test and maintain your smoke detectors. Keep in mind that you should be changing the batteries at least twice a year.
  • Check that your CO detectors are working properly. Carbon monoxide is poisonous and presents serious, fatal risks, so it is vital that your detectors are working properly.
  • Ensure that you have a family emergency plan in place. All family members should know what to do in the event of an emergency.
  • Keep your emergency kit well stocked. This should include a complete first-aid kit.
  • Hire a professional to inspect your fuel-burning appliances.
  • Have a professional check your chimney and vents. "Have a professional inspect these to ensure that everything is connected and in good condition and that nothing is blocked," says the IBC.
  • Make sure that your car's tire pressure and fluid are at the proper levels, and that the vehicle's lights and signals are functioning correctly.
  • Keep an up-to-date home inventory list
  • Review all of the details of your home insurance policy
