Tips for hiding a spare key

Here's how to hide your spare keys properly.

Getting locked out of the house can ruin anyone's day. But, mistakes happen, and we've all forgotten our keys at one point or another.

One of the easiest ways to make sure that you never get locked out in the cold is to hide a spare key somewhere on your property. Of course, you should be careful while doing this, because hiding it too well will make it difficult for you to remember where you hid it while leaving it out in the open could invite a thief.

Here are some tips for optimal spare key placement:

  • Avoid the obvious. One of the worst things you can do is leave a spare key in a place where anyone would think to look. Hiding it under the doormat or a nearby flower pot just isn't secure enough.
  • Use velcro. Do you have a closed rain gutter that slopes away from the house? Take some velcro and attach your key on the top part inside the gutter, where it will stay dry even on a rainy day.
  • Try the decoy trick. If you really want to mess with a burglar's head, place your key in a jar with a bunch of different decoy keys that don't open anything important. As long as the real key doesn't stand out, but you still know what it looks like, you should be good to go.
